It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dorothy “Edie” Huffman on March 24, 2026 at the Royal University hospital Saskatoon. She died peacefully with family by her side.
Edie is survived by her husband Ed Stephens, her sister Betty Jean Vermue (Bill). Nieces and nephews, Debbie Wyatt (Curt), Sandy Plouffe (Stacy), Pam Stronski, Marlo and Reg Vermue, Cheryl (Adrian), Christine and Tracy Choptain, and many great nieces and nephews (Colt, Mason and Camryn Plouffe, Taylor and Connor Wyatt, Ashley Collier (Jared), Aaron Stronski, Stokely Zuber and Jane Ritchie) as well as great, great nephew Boden Collier. Also close to her heart were Ed’s children Andrea Holmes (Garry) and Richard Stephens (Clare) and their families.
Edie was predeceased by her husband Wayne Huffman, her sister Ann Marie Stronski, parents Elsie and Reginald Grobb and her brother Donovan.
Edie was born Dec 12, 1940 in Portage la Prairie. Edie grew up on the Grobb family farm and shared that that was important as “farm girls know how to work”. That set the stage for her very accomplished nursing career later in life.
Throughout her career she worked and contributed to nursing in areas of community health, clinical practice education, research and administration. She graduated from U of T in 1962. She worked as a public health nurse in Flin Flon where she met Wayne and they married in 1965 and moved to Calgary. She joined the General hospital in maternal child health as an instructor in Obstetrics.
Edie became the director of nursing at many hospitals throughout her career. The Grace Hospital, Holy Cross hospital and finally Colonel Belcher hospital in 1988 as director of nursing for medicine and human resources. She was well known for having a high standard of dedication and commitment to all her team members, encouraging growth and personal development. She did so with grace, kindness and positivity.
Edie had a full active and wonderful life. Music played an important role in her life and she was always involved in choir and played the piano and organ. Edie was an avid sports fan having season tickets to Calgary Flames for over 20 years. She was full of life with a great sense of humour and infectious laugh. She loved to cook and host family and friends. The guest room was like a wonderful retreat for all who traveled to visit.
She was Aunt Edie to so many and enjoyed being apart of all our lives, she always knew what her kids (nieces and nephews) were up to and remained close with us all. Edie and Wayne lived in Calgary all their married life and spent many winters in Mexico. They had a wonderful community of friends and neighbors and loved being a special friend to Linda, Mark, Josh and Kylie for many years.
Edie reconnected with Ed Stevens, a long time school mate and they married in 2019 moving to Saskatoon shortly after. They were smitten and enjoyed seven wonderful years of marriage.
The family would like to thank the staff at St Paul’s Hospital Palliative care unit in Saskatoon for the wonderful care and compassion she received over her remaining days.
Cremation has taken place. Burial and reception in Portage la Prairie at a later date.
