Garry Ellsworth Brecken

1940-2024

Dad passed away on Friday, September 20th, 2024, at St. Paul's Hospital Palliative Care Unit at the age of 83. He will be lovingly remembered by his children Travis, Rhonda (Jason) Stovra, and Dallas, his grandchildren Matthew and Bret, sister-in-law Bev (Lawrence) Pinnell, and nieces Angie and Lisa. Dad was predeceased by his wife Donna, parents Dorothy and Art Brecken, and nephew Duane.

Dad was born on October 10th, 1940, to Art and Dorothy Brecken at the Avonlea, Saskatchewan hospital. He went to school in Truax, Saskatchewan, and after graduating he was employed as an orderly at the Royal University Hospital. He and Donna were married in 1968, and in 1973 he started working at the City of Saskatoon in the Works Division until his retirement in 2005.

Dad loved gardening, especially growing his famous tomatoes. He always made sure there was enough to go around for everyone. Dad mostly loved photography and enjoyed taking rodeo action photos and selling them to the cowboys at the next rodeo. He was selected to photograph the CPRA Finals Rodeo in Edmonton and the CRCA Finals Rodeo in Lloydminster. When he was not working or taking pictures, he could be found in his darkroom developing and processing his photos, which he really enjoyed. He was very fond of music and was proud of the guitars that he built along the way. Dad was extremely proud of his grandchildren and encouraged them to pursue music or anything else they were involved in.

The family would like to thank the wonderful caring staff at St. Paul's Hospital Palliative Care Unit for the wonderful care that Dad received.

Family graveside service will be held at a later date. In honor of Dad, make sure to enjoy a tomato sandwich!
