In Loving Memory of Lionel Perry Betker
February 23, 1947 - September 14, 2025

Lionel Perry Betker, born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan and raised in the close-knit community of Ebenezer by his loving parents, Fred and Amy, passed away on September 14, 2025, at University Hospital in Saskatoon.

In 1965, Lionel moved to Saskatoon, where his life began to take shape in unforgettable ways. He held many different jobs over the years, including owning and operating the roller rink and co-owning his prized Realty World Number Seven Realty, building a diverse skillset that he continued to use right up until his passing. As a Real Estate Agent, Lionel was known for going above and beyond-always putting people first and making sure every detail was taken care of.

It was at an ice-skating rink where he met the love of his life, Barb. They married on October 9, 1971, at Balmoral United Church in Saskatoon, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with laughter, devotion, and unwavering support. Barb passed away shortly before Lionel, and the two are reunited once again.

Lionel was truly larger than life. Known as the life of the party, he had a gift for making everyone feel seen and heard. Whether it was a quick hello or a long chat, Lionel never missed a chance to connect. He was the kind of friend who always showed up-ready to lend a hand, offer advice (whether you asked for it or not), and share a laugh.

He was a man of many tools-literally. If a neighbour needed something, Lionel likely had five of whatever it was. He was never shy about telling you when you were wrong, often punctuating his thoughts with a signature "Well shit..." or "Honest to God," along with a few colorful made-up German swears.

Lionel lived life in motion and rarely sat still. He was always on the go and cherished his regular coffee meetups with "the boys." He had a love for golf, and throughout his life was surrounded by many friends and family with whom he shared countless memories-dancing the night away, enjoying adventures at the lake, playing cards late into the night, BS'ing at coffee, and catching up with family at "Amy's Night".

He loved listening to the oldies and wasn't shy about getting his groove on. He loved his flowers and had a soft spot for birds, and was a true connoisseur of hotdogs. Lionel was also famously organized-sometimes to a fault-but it was part of what made him so dependable.

Nothing brought Lionel more joy than his family. He adored his sons, Jody (Amanda) and Chad (Heidi) with an unwavering pride and always had them at the center of everything that mattered. He treasured every moment spent with his five grandchildren: Kamryn, Addison, Rowan, Gabby, and Luka. Whether it was playing games or wrestling, going for A&W dates, or being a willing model for makeup sessions and the not-so-excited recipient of their homemade toupees and the butt of all their jokes, he truly embraced every moment with them. Heidi and Amanda knew that without Barb's guidance Lionel might go rogue, so they had lovingly informed him that they'd be keeping an eye on him on her behalf. The look on his face, eyes wide and mouth agape, it might have been the one and only time in his life he was truly speechless.

But above all, Barb was his heart. Though he teased her endlessly, his love and loyalty were fierce. If anyone dared to disrespect her, Lionel would rise to her defense without hesitation.

Lionel was predeceased by his siblings Clarence, Percy, Renee, Maxine, Hardy, Dennis and Douglas. He is survived by his siblings Francis and Tessera, along with many nieces, nephews, and friends who will deeply miss his energy, humor, and unforgettable presence. Lionel's legacy of kindness, laughter, and unwavering support will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

An Open House to celebrate Lionel will be held at Grosvenor Park United Church on October 11, 2025, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. All are welcome to join in sharing memories and stories, over coffee, tea, and desserts.
